Own the financial operations of Thatch, from accounting to financial planning.
About the role
As the Controller at Thatch you’ll help establish best practices in financial reporting and define financial operations at Thatch. You’ll work collaboratively across leadership, finance, and engineering to lead financial operations as we enter our next phase of growth.
You will be Thatch’s first controller and a foundational member of the Finance team. You should have well-informed opinions about financial processes and be capable enough to build and manage them, and should enjoy partnering with technical colleagues to build financial infrastructure.
What you'll do
- Create and maintain financial accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance with GAAP and other regulatory requirements
- Manage all aspects of financial accounting, including month-end close, financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting in conjunction with our outsourced accounting firm
- Lead the preparation of financial statements, providing accurate and timely reporting to the management team, board, and investors
- Manage cash flow, financial planning, and analysis (FP&A), ensuring the company has the capital resources needed for future growth
- Collaborate with the engineering team to drive business strategy through product insights and data-driven recommendations, including the continuous improvement of internal ledgering and other financial systems within our product
- Oversee the implementation and optimization of financial software and systems used by Thatch
Background we're looking for
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA required)
- 6-8+ years of accounting/finance experience, preferably in the technology sector
- Previous experience in a fast-paced startup environment, with a track record of building and scaling finance teams
- Previous experience working at a Big 4 accounting firm
- Passionate about developing accounting principles from scratch
- Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to thrive in a dynamically evolving environment
- Proficiency with financial software and tools (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, Excel).
- Good sense of humor
Experience we’d be particularly excited about
- Helped develop accounting principles from scratch in a complex, highly regulated industry
- Experience in fintech and/or insuretech sectors
- Prior controller or assistant controller experience at a high-growth startup
- Highly adaptable, creative, enjoy learning new things quickly
